Oral History Outing
- 17th August 2005
It was a glorious day for the Oral History
group of the SGF to get out and investigate the local heritage.
Starting at Brynaman in their newly re-furbished Heritage
centre it was a delight to see how involved their local community
is in preserving their history.
Then it was on to Llandovery where we saw
the beautiful statue of Llywelyn at the castle and a visit
to the local museum where we learned about the drovers, the
legends and lots of other local characters and history. Hungers
were satisfied with delicious food at the King's Head.
Stopping
off at Myddfai on our return gave us an insight into the long
tradition of herbal medicine there and the legends that surround
the area. St Michael's Church, Myddfai, is a beautiful and
historic building dating back to the 12th century and one
of the rare few that are still open to the public. Then finally
a quick cup of tea at Llangadog before the journey home. Back
over the wonderful landscape of the Black Mountains that still
bear the scars of our industrial heritage.
